What is open graph?

Open Graph (OG) is an internet protocol originally developed by Facebook in 2010 that enables web pages to become rich, structured objects across social media platforms and messaging apps. By adding specialized Open Graph meta tags (such as `og:title`, `og:description`, `og:image`, `og:url`, and `og:type`) into the `<head>` section of an HTML document, website owners can explicitly control how their web content looks when shared on platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Pinterest, WhatsApp, and Slack. Without Open Graph tags, social platforms scrape pages blindly, often pulling irrelevant text snippets or wrong, low-resolution thumbnail images. Implementing accurate Open Graph tags ensures shared links display eye-catching preview cards featuring compelling headlines, crisp custom banners, and accurate descriptions, which dramatically increases social media engagement and link click-through rates.
