About this tool
This estimates how easy your text is to read using two related formulas, both based on sentence length and syllable count, not vocabulary or grammar. Shorter sentences built from shorter words score as easier to read; long sentences packed with multi-syllable words score as harder, regardless of whether the content itself is actually complex.
Flesch Reading Ease vs. Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level
Flesch Reading Ease produces a 0-100 score, higher means easier to read. Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level runs the same underlying inputs through a different formula to estimate a US school grade level instead, so a score of "8" suggests the text is readable by an average 8th grader.
Syllable counting is approximate
Counting syllables programmatically has no perfectly reliable method, this tool uses a common pattern-matching approximation (counting vowel groups, adjusting for silent endings) rather than a full pronunciation dictionary. Treat both scores as a directional signal for editing, not an exact measurement.
